With the local election's in England over, and a voter turnout of just 36%, Should the law be changed so that everybody must vote?

I myself am undecided.

I am happy though that the torie's did well, it may give this goverment a kick up the a*se

I think that would be a very unpopular law. However i do believe there should be additional encouragement to vote. Apart from dancing girls at the polling station however i can't think of much that would attract Joe Public to vote.

I would like to see voting mandatory, but can see the other side of the coin as well. What I do believe is that any voting day should take place on a Sunday, so at least those who can’t be bothered to vote would not have work as their excuse not being there.

I think every man jack should vote especially as it is our right and that there are many who would like to vote but just don’t get the right because of the which ever banana republic they live in.

I'll second that, Mike. I feel that if I vote, I can then complain long and loud about the things I don't like having at least tried to change them. Too many people in the world don't get the chance.

What really annoy's me are people who moan about thing's and then say they didn't vote!

I know it is the law in certain countries and it has a lot to said for it. There again in a free democratic country should not the choice be yours. there have been times when the candidates for election have been so appalling would not have been happy to vote for any of them

Good point. I did once look at the sorry lot and decided that the best vote was for Dino of the Ozone Friendly Monster Raving Looney Party - at least he represented a party with taxation powers if elected! But I reckoned better that then no vote, and I would have cast a spoiled ballot if need.

What you are saying is that it is not possible to vote in advance in England? In my country it is possible to vote a month in advance of the election day (this voting service close one week ahead of the actual election day) at the post office, community building or other dedicated public offices. Since the system was introduced a few years ago the average of voters has grown on a national basis and especially shift workers, first time voters and elderly people benefit from this solution.

Sounds a sensible idea to me. I’m all for the majority of citizen voting, then perhaps we will get the government that the majority of us want and not a shower of prats who do exactly what they want without a thought of what the people want
