Hi, could someone answer these qns. I am a doctor and plan to join the RAF. I would like to know about the minimum waist measurement one has to be before going to OASC. Currently my bmi is 27. Also is colour blindness a factor? Thanx in advance.

I dont think there would be a waist measurement 'rule' or regulation specifically

if you can pass the physical tests then I wouldnt think it would matter a jot

as long as you are in good health (as you would know being a doctor that a bmi of 27 is considered overweight) but with the bmi scale its tricky because you could just be an extremely strong bugger that's in the gym alot :D

there are a few serving usually kicking around here that could tell you specifically but as far as I am aware there is no waist measurement regulation.

Some fat boy measurement systems use waist to hip ratio, along with wrist ratio for obesity. BMI is crap like Stu says.

As you know the higher the waist measurement so the likely risk of coronary and/or vascular disease etc. My tip for whats its worth is to pull really hard on the tape and your waist measurement becomes less and so do your risk factors

Forces medicals use BMI although there is scope for the MO to highlight wobblies.

Surely waist size would also relate to your height, sort of waist size would you expect on some one who is six & half feet high and plays Rugby. I would have thought it to be slightly different to a 5 foot 2 inch whimp.

Surely it also relates to how toned you are in that area too....having a toned waist will obviously mean it'll be a lot smaller than an un-toned waist but won't necessarily mean you are underweight etc.

As for the colour blindness, you are (or were 10 years ago) tested for that on entry. Don't know what the rules are though, but we had a lad pass out at Honington who, funnily enough, had a Warrant Officer dad, who was colour blind of a sort, he saw grass and wagons as bright orange, mental! He wasn't often trusted as NBC sentry with detector paper :D
