Nps DANTAE, was a good trip - managed to get away with light blisters despite wearing bin bags inside me boots!!

Definately on the cards for another trip!

walking with wet feet causes all sorts of problems, and while your feet would sweat, the problems would be nowhere near as bad as having soaking feet for 6 hours. also, shoes become wet, and dont really dry out if the weathers cold, and putting them on every morning could have you developing trench foot. a good pair of boots is the most comfortable answer!

Yeah but the weathers been pretty good for one, and it seems like a dumb ass idea to me. Having your feet sweat that much is pointless, i'd rather get myself a new pair of boots. Or if your that desperate, i've had socks in the past with a goretex membrane that at least allows a bit of breathability.

You can temporarily waterproof any shoes, at least enough to cope with this weather. Lots of products available, most well known being dubbin for boots, the basic principle of them all is to provide a thin coating of waterproof material so the water runs off rather than soaking through the show.

Putting bin bags inside really isn't a good idea, it keeps your feet inside the wet environment without allowing them to dry. Even if your feet got wet the usual araangment of boots, thick sock, thin sock should help wick water away from your foot easily enough. And even in cold weather you can dry your boots weel enough, especially if you take your inners into the main tent with you. Allowing your feet to completely dry out over night and your boots mainly will mean trench foots quite unlikely.

I would say the risk from keeping your feet wrapped up in a non-breathable bag full of their own sweat would be worse than damp feet.

The reason for the bin bags was fairly straight forward, I had Gaiters on and waterproofed boots but we were walking down a river at one stage and my boots still managed to fill with water.

When morning came they were still sodden inside, so i put plastic bags inside to keep the water off my feet. Although making your feet sweat, it would of been more painful if my blisters had developed further which would definately of happened if I hadn't of put the bin bags in.

I wasnt about to walk back up Pen-y-Fan with wet feet to arrive at the peak with feet like balloons.

I think really its all down to personal choice. You were their saw the conditions of your boots, feet and weather. You obviously made the choice to put plastic bags in.

Personally I've never been in a situation where I felt the need to put bin bags in my boots, but thats just me.
