Oh for the grand old days......Thursday morning, Co's Parade, Deal.....Full Blues......First order of the day......."Over the Wall"....back again, covered in shite!....then the Inspection... everyone on extra Parade...........
Then there was the Adjuntant's parade... on his Bloody Orse.... Orse's head in front by two recruits/Juniors....snotting all over your brasses and belt....by the time Adjie got infront of said recruit you could lay odds 10 to 1 that you would be in for an extra parade.
Happy days.....sorry Owdun got carried away by nostalgia!

Ah, now Gentlemen Back to the days of 'Ginger suits' or if you were lucky enough a Canadian Battledress,SV Boots (My non de plume) in the Char Wallas Book on blank weeks,Not forgetting the dennison smock and dennim trousers Black webbing,and the old faithfull bergen rucksack,the days when the Green lid was bullet proof?, a bolt action Le-Enfield 303 or later on the FN Rifle,when the SV Boot was the LPC of the Day (leather personel carrier),when Bugle Calls were the means of what went on, reveille, Markers,Officers call,Cookhouse,defaulters,Mail,alarm to arms,clear lower deck,and then my favourite finished for the day and not forgetting lights out and maybe a few other calls I've missed.How many on the forum remember those days,come on own up you 'old B******s stand by your beds.Aye JR

Thats better JR some decorum back on the forum........ some real memories... of Days of Yore..... When we spent more time on a single wave than they spend at sea today. When a commissions was measured by the number of ports visited, not the port you tied up in.... Up'n at'em Chatham..........actually that was a wee bit before my time... but like most of my Nautical knowledge....was gleened in the NAFFI queue.

I will probably take stick for this, but actually I quite liked my ginger suit. Any of you lot out there who were on the Tanganyika run and who were not trained on the 303? At least not trained until about two minutes before you went ashore.

Andy,The good old Le-Enfield 303 at the time of the Tanganyika run?,Its a damm good job that the Ships detachments still had em?,the beauty of that rifle was it only had two removable parts, the bolt and mag.Aye JR

A (fairly) serious question, was the SV boot better than the DMS boot, I only wore DMS and putees and found the boot to be a cr*p, by the time I got the leather nice and soft the nylon stitching was pulling through the leather. and the inner sole was turning to cardboard under the nylon mesh insole.

Chunky,as many of the 'Old and Bold' will tell you the SV boot was a serious piece of equipment outlasted most of footwear issued, good boot for scrambling rocky out-crops, The only proplem was you could always tell where Royal had been because of the inprint of the boot,always kept me boots on and the bedroom window open???.Aye JR

JR.... you ain't wrong... The good old SV Boot, I had two pairs during my whole trip, 1 years Girls and 9 Man's time... then, past that, into Civvie street... for a while after Demob I worked on the Families Dray (another story) and the lads I worked with wanted to know where I got me Boots... They never did believe me that they were 6 years old.... Last I saw them was in the Garden shed.... Moons back..... Oh..... the soles had worn well but the uppers still shone like a new sixpenny piece!
So to answer your question, Chunkie, Soles Vinal, in my oppinion, out weighed Direct Moulded Soles by far!

I initially wore SV boots - great once broken in. Then we changed to DMS. Rubbish in my opinion. But better than Jungle Boots that barely lasted a week in the Ulu!

Alas, I only ever fired the .303 in the shooting team - when I was in the ATC?!? V. accurate I remember but it hurt my b......y shoulder!
