I personally think it should be only ex Royal and partners, as they know the lingo and the life,
That seems a bit harsh Flo.

I joined because the site was called 'Military' Forums. I am aware that the majority of actual ex-service members are ex-marines but looking at the profiles of some of the regular ex-service contributors they are not Royals either but have had some good input to the site.
I may be wrong but I presume there are several sites already which exist purely for RM's and RM activities. This site does cater for all arms and I think the format is quite good. I can see at a glance what forum a thread is in and what it is about. If it doesn't interest me I don't waste time looking.
Besides I want to make sure there is a fiver that the wife doesn't get her hands on!

Hi moderators
I agree with Budgie, you got dedicated sites to RM exRM this I thought was the whole point of this one to cater for any one with a genuine interest in the all of the military
I enjoy reading the threads of the paras getting ripped into by a herd of Royals. Also thinking although the five pound fee is good to get rid of cyberknobshiners, that is your job to get rid of them any way and so far you done a good job. Cant find any hardcore smut anywhere-so damn it you doing a too gooda job

I think it's a good idea gents as long as we maintain the ability for new users to join. We may however run the risk of no longer attracting members like the ones we currently have. If all the best conversations are locked and the banter unseen then the outer ring site may become little more than a drip site for no hopers and a recruitment info site for the "wannabbes". Perhaps if the threads were open to read but not to comment on unless a member? That would certainly ensure that we would continue to attract the right sort of clientele?
Just a thought guys but basically I'm in.
Sticks, it may have to be more than £10 if I'm let off my leash
" Yup... all for it myself... this could then also have some of the more adult dits etc as well. Oakers and Sully would have to pay £10 for
the amount of dits they have though!!"

Couple more points to deal with:
The 'Full' members area would be viewable, but unavailable for posting by non-members. Thus preventing dipsticks from disrupting the flow of threads.
The site would of course remain available to ALL military types, even Percy and Crabs. (I must go and lie down now, I've thrown away a great opportunity)
It's not so much an exclusivity idea, more a return to the normal, without doomers. One of the main uses of the site, by young lads and girls wanting to join the services would be enhanced if members felt they were talking to somebody who legitimately wanted help, and was not just yanking our chains. Witness "Utrinique (Sic) Paratus".

The idea of a charge for membership has two main benefits. Firstly, it would pay for increased bandwidth which means improved performance like being able to post phots directly into your posts and Jay would get some help with site running costs. He pays the cost himself, and has done since start-up. Secondly, it won`t stop the nobbers. But having to re-register each time they are binned and having to pay a fiver each time, is a deterrant. Early last year the site was small, less than two hundred members for a long time. I remember the first of these tossers( Defiant by name, for some strange reason, I miss-spealt it as deaf ant) Total waste of space. I`ve watched the likes of Airhead et al, with a sense of dismay. I`ve allso seen some good posters leave this forum because of these winkers. Five pounds to get the forum back to where it was headed last year, is a small amount.
Ref who gets in, this site replaced the discussion area on the "Once A Marine" site, which explains why so many Bootnecks abide here. The site is called "Militaryforums" We knew it would grow to encompass all branches, and most of the regular posters have known that was where the site was headed. In the early days, I used to pm new users, till it got to the point were too many were joining. We still give a hearty "welcome aboard" to most. We had the influx from surplusspals, and after a few hiccups, we have some good members from there. Word is getting around, the site will grow, there are posters from all branches and the more the merrier as far as I`m concerned.
I vote for the proposition

yours fraternally,Aye, Harry Hackedoff

I cooberate everything that HH has said. It should remain open for all to see. Especially the PTSD discussions as this could be a life saver for somebody?
The charge would certainly help rid us of the Winkers that pop up every now and then.
Just let me know when I have to pay

written in the blood of a certified virgin
HI, I live in Middlesbrough (a particularly rough part) and it’s almost impossible to find a virgin whose old enough to give blood and is not already a mother. There may be one or two around but frankly I don’t want to go near them, as there is a reason they are virgins.
As for a £5 joining fee I’m unsure, I know there is a cost or running things but it surely can’t cost over £6000 to run the site. But prophets are good I suppose. We’ll all benefit from friendlier admin. But what if they go power mad?
p.s has anyone read the book 1984 by orwell. who knows where the madness will end

As I am one of the prophets of the site, I don't see any problems with one making a profit. I, thereby, predict that the site will be better off if Jay is allowed to utilize such profits that he may make to improve the content.

I personally don't know the history of the site, having joined recently, but reading through the posts on this thread alone I gather that it has been running under one name or another for over a year.
That is a year where the site owner (Jay?) has initially set the site up, maintained the site, carried the cost of setting up and maintaining the site, with others has moderated the site and all without expecting payment.
The chances are that there is a full time job in there somewehere too so add on giving up loads of personal time to keep the site going.
£5 is not a fortune (2 pints and a packet of crisps?) and I would suggest that the current membership is such that any monies raised would not be enough for one to live in luxury in the Maldives for the rest of ones days.
Any surplus cash can be used for a number of things. Donation to Service Charities, held in reserve for Site/hardware improvements , making covert payments to supportive Rockapes

or spending it on Wine, Women and Song and wasting any that's left over.
The choice is simple. Pay and stay or don't pay and leave. Me? I'm staying.
P.S. If anyone dares to suggest I am supporting Royals in any venture I will deny it vehemently. This post is simply proof that my medication is not strong enough!!

Crikey!, I only went away for the weekend and I come back to find a quiet revolution brewing. Yes I'm in as, like many of you, I get a great deal out of contact with ex-forces pals (even if I haven't met you yet). As a Bootie I do of course favour that part of the forum but the Booties do seem to wander freely so most of it is worth delving into. Like Oakers I initially feared that keeping part of the forum under wraps would curtail recruitment but I note it will only be under wraps by virtue of being `read-only' for non-subscribers. The idea of probation worries me, does this mean I have to be nice to Rob, Harry and Stickers ALL the time?. Actually it does seem a reasonable approach as none of we regular members set out to offend anyone, wind-up, bait, yes but certainly I know that the Booties in particular have always considered swearing when in mixed company a cardinal sin ( although a few of you Jennys and QARANCs could hold your own when needed). I never minded the inane stuff all that much but the genuinely insulting abusive stuff has never been called for and as for the `Who is best the boy scouts or the girl guides' questions,; if we can dispense with those, so much the better.
In short (then why weren't you, you prat) I think the proposal is sound and I agree that the use of the fee should be left to Jay, who has been providing us with this lifeline to insanity.

Nothing to add to the excellent points made so far, even with the plethora of Royal I’m in.
