Josh.
No probs, Josh.

Give us a kiss and I'll forgive you. No tongues, mind! :-?

I said sterile because there can be no real answer. Empires can only be seen in the context of the times in which they existed. For example, Alexander the Great created one of the greatest empires the world has seen, conquering almost the entire known world - before he was 24. And he did it through his generalship - the empire was the result of one man's actions. Perhaps, taken all in all, he was the most incomparable general the world has ever seen.

If we look at Britain's Empire, it wasn't so much the Empire per se that was so great. It was the Industrial Revolution that started in Britain that changed the world so much. The Empire was an artefact of the Ind. Revolution, not the other way round.

It suprised me to see that more people thing that Nazi Germany was worse than the Soviet Union. Hitler killed perhaps 4 million of his own Jews and others, through camps, 8 million of other nations. He killed or maimed about 20 million people with his war (damage inflicted by his side.) The Soviet Union on the other hand killed about 60 million of its own people I think if I remeber correctly, and nearly brought the world to nuclear war several times plus they invaded just as many countries as Nazi Germany.. Who really was worse?

I know what you mean BenChug, I think the reason for this is the people who voted were not taught about the Soviet Union. I myself studied it allot at school from Lenin, the Bolshevik's and Stalin's 5 year plan. Now if they did study the Soviet Union I think the poll would read allot different.

Ben

Hitler and Stalin were both evil men. I think the difference in perception is because Stalin committed his atrocities within his 'own borders': Hitler didn't and plunged the whole world into war.

The treaty of Verssiles (sp) plunged the world into war. Hitler, Stahlin and Lincoln are all holding hands in hell today.

Atrocities in your own country or in another are still atrocities and are as bad as each other. Didn't Hitler committed his atrocities well into the war, Stalin had been committing his atrocities long before war broke out.

Jason,

Of course you're right. I was making the point about the perceived differences between Hitler and Stalin: not the actual differences - or lack of them.

I get your point Sisyphus, I just wanted to let others who did not know that Stalin had been committing his atrocities long before war broke out. :)
