Cheers for all the advice guys. I'll try this pool running malarkey next week and I'm going to fork out and see a sports physio next week too; if I see my GP I'll be waiting for months before I get to see a NHS physio.
Reading up about knee pain on the net, it seems likely that my problem is down to something easily sorted like a muscle imbalance pulling the patella slightly out of line (I can hear it clicking faintly when I bend my legs), so hopefully I'll be able to do some exercises/get some shoe inserts to sort it out so I can get back to running again ASAP as all this sitting about is doing my nut in.
karlbfc- with an attitude like yours I think you'll do really well in the marines. Apparently the training staff at Lympstone love cocky, arrogant lads, and if you've got any experience of playing war games on your XBox/PS3 I'd mention that too as it shows you already have a good understanding of combat principles so they'll cut out a few weeks of your training and you can have a bit of a chill out.

Karl, unless you have passed selection and been badged can I recommend, nay tell you, too bin your sig. Also if your Dad is a Doctor he is crap, some of the shite you have spouted only makes me look at the youth of today and wonder if you had been growing up in the 30's and 40's we'd all be speaking german now.

Gimpy. I hope you get over it mate. I had about the same problem as you. Picture the Knee cap as an " O ", my pain was around " U ". When I sat down for long periods of time, I would have to stand up, and bend my knee a few times to let it crack, to release some pain and help it. I took about 3 weeks off, and it's about 90% better mate. I went to a physiotherapist and it was diagnosed as " Runners Knee ", medically known as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome. They advised for me to check my shoes and make sure I have the proper pair, stability , neutral, or mobility, depending on your arch, or any pronation issues. It can also stem from weak inside quad muscles.
Some of the exercises I did were the following - I did a lot of swimming, and running in water. Avoid bearing a lot of weight on the knee, such as squats, or leg press. Try lying down on your back and do leg lifts, try to keep your leg straight, and if you have any, try some ankle weights. Although you are suppose to avoid squats, you can put your back against the wall, put your GOOD leg in front of you, and go down half way and back up. These are just half squats and should not put a lot of weight on the knee.
In no way am I a doctor, or neither is my dad

Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd tag onto this one as it might be helpful...
I have a knee injury, briefly had some physio at CTC but this was just before Easter leave started & didn't get to the bottom of the problem.
So, I want to use my time on leave to get a private specialist to look at it & if possible treat it.
Does anyone know what exactly I should be looking for?
There are loads of physios & sports therapists etc out there and I'm sure they all would claim to be able to help me if I asked them!
Also I've previously learned the hard way about going to my GP about sports injuries

so won't be going that way again...

For a physio, unless you know someone who can recommend one, then it's just a case of plucking a name out of the phone book. Most places have a webpage now, so you could check out individual practices there. I've been to a few physios over the years, and although the quality did vary I never went somewhere that was poor.
Personally I keep on getting clicking kneecaps, that are aleviated by leg raises.

I used to get aching knees. I fixed it by walking for 10 minutes after a run and then doing 10 minutes stretching. Apparently you're supposed to hold stretches 5 seconds before your run and 30 seconds after your run.

How about ringing up your local hospitals and asking if any of their knee specialist have a private practise? (or physios whichever you decide you want to see)
At least that way you know they know their stuff.
