My answer was very short and books are written on the subject of 'Selection - -Destruction'.
So to expand slightly, the so called elites expect it's members to have a great deal of SELF discipline, in order to maintain their fitness when the external discipline of recruit training is gone and you are serving with a unit. Also they are expected to get there in the same bunch that they set off in and be able to give accurate, aimed fire in a fire-fight, when they get there or on the way.
