I agree there. I go on his outward projection which I don't think is very good but then again that depends on your own personal beliefs.

Personally I too have great respect for McNab, Ryan etc for what they have done, there is no doubt they have achieved great things and given considerable service at no small risk to themselves. But given their antics post SAS, while not enough to write them off completely, are far less honourable so I'd say I only have grudging respect for them.
In a similar way I do have respect for Tony Blair, he's in many ways a superb statesman with excellent diplomatic skills and has performed very well in the international arena both publicly and privately. However, I will still happily call him a twit and vote him out at the earliest opportunity .

There's also this show on BBC called "SAS: Are you tough enough?" etc. etc.

So don't worry that an XBOX-game will give the SAS a bad repuation. It already has, and the Regiment lost it's covertness ever since the storming of the Iranian embassy in 1980.

As in any commercial environment, having a big name "endorse" your product is likely to increase sales dramatically. That the chaps noted have endorsed certain games is a financially wise move. No one complained about Planet Hollywood being endorsed by the Big 3 after all (same principle different product).

Before slapping the guys for selling their Regt souls, lets not forget that once out they all need to earn a living and that MOD pensions are no more generous than any other. I doubt anyone joins the Regt to make a million upon leaving.

For what it's worth, I think it's just a shame that David Stirling's dream should get smeared because of few acts of selfishness. It just bothers me slightly that even with their experiences and training, a few guys could allow the most crass aspects of human nature to prevail at the cost, potentially, of their Regt's good name. I suspect that the anger felt by many is borne of disappointment, having expected more of these people.

Yes, well McNabs a blatant liar, 200Ibs Bergan. Doubt it mate, a RM Corporal recently informed my brother during training of this as him and an oppo laoded up with 120Ibs, tried to put more weight in and the bloody thing broke.............so 200Ibs very doubtful.

Mitch (or his editor) might be exaggerating in part however, he was awarded both the MM and DCM, so some respect is due as to my knowledge neither decorations are just handed out to blatant liars. Show me a squaddie (or Bootie for that matter) that has never exaggerated the truth for dramatic effect !!! We've all done it I suspect.

All this talk of "The Regt" and "Stirlings Dream" makes my head go dizzy. Maybe the guys would have held onto the dream if (a) they had not been issued with the wrong radio frequency codes (b) a search and rescue mission had, as was promised if required, been mounted. That kind of incompetence is rather bad for troop morale.

The powers that be at MOD have an aversion to being critisised and so rather than answer the hard questions it is easier to blag the guys for letting the regiment down by publishing accounts, forgetting of course that when it suits the Regt, it's all to eager to have accounts published. (even forgetting the WW2 material, Tony Jeapes, one time CO, wrote a very interesting account of the Oman operations - some might say the first inside expose and neither Phillip Warner nor Tony Geraghty could ever have got their books off the ground without inside assistance)!
