The snaring and eating of rabbits was common practice at Depot Para during the 80s, but was down to the individual platoon staff.

It was carried out during Basic Wales initially and there are plenty of stories of recruits having a hard time killing a live animal close up (slotting birds with an air rifle doesn't count), and choosing to cry off instead.

When Advanced Wales came around everyone has been conditioned enough so this and some basic survival training was introduced into it.

Unfortunately, the Craphats are now involved, and just like the CFT ( a proper test, not the fag BFT in trainers and t-shirt) it has been stopped so not to upset them, as they can't do it.

cmon you wanna join da marines and u dont like the idea of killing rabbits? iv been shooting ducks, geese, pidgeons rabbits etc all my life nothing to it!
Shooting small animals all good and easy, breaking their neck, skinning and eating them is another matter!

I know i would be able to do it, i'd just need to be VERY hungry and exhausted!!

Rabbit killing bothered me when I did it the first time, actually it was the gutting that I didn't care for, but I was 8. Once my dad cooked that thing up I was bringing a rabbit home once every few weeks, until my dad made me quit. People get naturally queezy when dismembering animals, but as said before hunger makes it an after thought. Slaughtering animals like on a farm gets to be just another chore. I choked chickens, shot hogs, broke rabbits necks, as well as the redundant equally sick stuff like milking cows, shoveling shit and gathering eggs from a nasty chicken house. Getting your own food can be gross.

I will remember to the day I die going on survival ex and the ML got his rabbit out and demonstrated killing it. Hitting its head off a tree etc, hitting the bach of its head with a knife, breaking its neck.

Then he took his false teeth out and bit its throat out...........

It was a nice white bunney with pink eyes. Not the horible brown stinkey wild ones you get.

If I remember rightly it was on exerceise Compass Rose and our group was given a chicken. After a demo from Dave Ashby (Of how they don't do it humanely in abottoirs) we had to go and sort scran out ourselves.
My task was to kill the bird by wringing its neck, by the time it was dead its neck was about a foot long and it probably died of boredom first anyway.
Suffice to say the stew was almost edible when we eventually got it in the mess tin.

We had a chicken between two on our ex (think it was called homing beam)

I teamed up with a lad from Bristol name of Trevor G****n who had been a butcher before he joined. Done and dusted and in the pot ASAP!

One bloke tried to kill his chicken with his rifle butt and nearly broke his toes as the bloody thing would not keep still. He got a neat bollo*king from Yorkie Malone that I do remember.

Want to eat real Yuk stuff? try Norge salted and air dried Cod. Looks like recycled old leather boots and tastes twice as bad.

Or the worst ever. Diesol flavoured Rump Steak! Never trust an idiot who tries to light a Barbi with it!

Ever tried steak fried in rifle oil.
We used to keep the oil in the fridge to thicken it a bit [Aden] came back one night and the tent was full of black smoke, two drunks frying a steak they had pinched had used the rifle oil. It tasted ok.

Killing rabbits, chicken, ducks, fish and other tasty things to eat Isn’t that hard, just don’t name the little critter first...

Mind you I’ve eaten some strange meats in my short time on this planet,
To list a few

Kangaroo
Shark
Crocodile
Ostrich
Swordfish
Veil

Dad was a butcher, and the weirder stuff I got to try in oz...

If you must ear a rat, unless it is a pet, for Gods sake only eat the legs. The rest may contain nasties.

Besr I ever caught and ate was a duck. Yhe goose was bigger but an evil looking bar steward.

Snake is fairly decent actually, got to sample some in Borneo. I heard that eating wabbit was a bad idea as it takes more energy to digest the stuff than you get out of it?
