If you want to join the Corps then forget just running on a treadmill. Find some route with uphill bits, downhill bits and so forth. Work out how long the route is, then run it whilst timing yourself.

Your best bet would be to find a guy with similar aims and work off each other whilst running or doing Gym training. Competion is a good way to improve your basic fitness. Plus you won't get bored out of your head pounding the same route every day when you can natter to your Oppo about the whys and wherefores of life it's meaning & everything.

Also don't forget that you could run to the gym and back again! You'll have warmed up by the time you get there, and can save the environment at the same time...

(this obviously assumes that you live within running distance of the gym)

All you need is a nice long running route with long hard hills. Thats how I keep trim. 6 miles with sum nice hills at a good pace. Very very good for running

Artist,

When you joined the RM did you ever do these things called Swedish exercises? Swedish something?!?! My dad's planning on doing some with me and I was a bit unsure when he chuckled and said "Hmmm they'll get you working..." What are they?

Hi David

He might be referring to Fartlek style running which in Swedish means "speed play" basically running and alternating different speeds.

faddius,

That may well be it although the main reason I asked Artist was becuase it was something that he done in the Marines. Possibly in training or after I'm not sure!

Fartlek may well have developed from these exercises I don't know to be honest. You may also be right but I think he said they were exercises you do on the spot or in a small area.

Arr Swedish PT!

Hateful stuff. But for me, the one I really detested was the USMC gym tests at 0830 hrs on a freezing cold morning in the Gym. Fine if you were fresh as a daisy but not to much fun if you had staggered back to Barracks around three in the morning after a night on the tiles with your Oppos and your Troop Sgt's SQ was PTI................."Huey" & "Ralph" were your constant companions come a morning like that! Then, if Fred deemed it a requirement. A nice Brisk run over the X country course around the Seaton Barracks area.....Good Owd Fred, all 5' 6" of him would be there encouraging you with such wonderful bits of advice as "Buck up Skin or your going round again!"

Sometimes if we had been 'really good' Fred would then suggest to the Troop Officer that a quick run around the Dewerstone in the afternoon would be a real boon to our fitness. Deathslides over the river, running over the slippery rocks in the river, climbing out of the river, avoiding the bloody river! scaling the 1 in 2 "TRACKS" around the River with this Demonic 5' 6" PTI built along the lines of a small but fully serviceable brick shit house screaming at you to "Pull your finger out Skin!" every two minutes. I never liked the Dewerstone. Wern't that keen on 5' 6" Sgt PTI's with an evil sense of humour either truth be told!

David, ask your dad about Egyptian PT, he was one of the best at that particular task. Someone had to do it you see.

Haven't you read the thread comandocrazy?

Try reading it through, and see if the answer to your question is there.

Well lads I took a step away from the treadmill this morning.... stretched for my usual 4 miler...... 1 last sip of water.... and off I went on a pretty hilly route I worked out on mapmyrun.com

Haha WELL it has to be said I deffo struggled and I had that sickly feeling at the end which I havnt had since I started running. I enjoy the ability to change your speed as and when you lie (i.e for a hill or when you have a sudden burst of motivation  )

So I'll deffo be keeping to the road with a nice four 4 milers a week to ready me for PRMC. Ta fellas! 8)

Talking about the Dewerstone. Not sure if you remember the area well Artist I live in the house next to the WhiteThorn pub just up from the river. Often go running up the river when its dry. When its wet and cold it is a recipe for disaster. The Dewerstone itself now is part of a tourist climbing wall. All the people who come to climb it are absolute S**T and leave the base in a state. Often see booties running up the single track to the top or through the lane on " Killer Hill".
