Probably doing the press ups with your hands too close together if they are hurting your wrists.

Like I said in a previous post, do your elbows HAVE to be touching your sides ?. In doing so it hurts my wrists. My elbows, bow outward when I do mine, but they sure as hell are not at 90 degree angles.
