The legion was the place to be if you wanted to learn all about soldiering if you wanted to join the IRA in the seventies and the eighties.

You will have to agree to go anywhere the FRENCH government want to send you. If your happy about that then go for it. But if I or one of my oppos meet you then your in the deep stuff.

They are not as good as they make themselves out to be. Any bunch of soldiers whos greatest claims are that they lost all their battles in the end for me is a NO NO

I know that if, for example a brit joined hed be fighting for France, but none the less the experience would be great. What about South Africans, Ozzies etc... that join the british forces, they fight for Britain.

I don't think that I've personally got the balls to say "bye mum, I'm off to join the legion now" and just turn up in France and go to a recruiting place. I'd probably fail the medical or summin.

I was reading an account from an ex-legionaire, and he said that out of the 75 at the selection only 8 got through, this is not because of fitness related problems, but because they were just not accepted, does anyone know why this would be?

It's something that I'd definitley be interested in, but I don't know nearly enough information to consider it seriously. And as for fighting for France, I wouldn't do it for that part, but more for the expreience etc...

The language wouldn't be too much of a problem, because I have basic fluency in Italian, and they share a very closly linked vocabulary and grammar structure.

I have a basic fluency in living. The French Foreign Legion tend to have a large loss of life when the shit hits the fan. Basically because the French Government don't have to send telegrams to the next of kin.

They don't give a shit if a bunch of blokes die in the service of the French Government.

No it's not chip on my shoulder. I've just been there. It is not nice seeing the other side of life. I wrapped after a few years because of what I saw whilst working for other persons. Forget the Legion. It has a mythical reputation built on rumour and
fantasy. However at the time of Suez (1956) it was the most battle
hardened force in the world. Not my words but from Maj. Gen. Nick
Vaux.
The Legion might send you on ops in for example Chad but as for
life in general it is boring and frustrating and you will certainly
suffer from 'cafard'.
I repeat with apologies to other readers what a Kings Badgeman
said who joined the RM after serving 5 years + in the REP and I

If the op had any intention of joining the Legion he should be out the I'M A SCAMMER SPAMMER!!! and doing the do somewhere in France right now..

In years gone by the Legion was the place to be for a scrap.. now you'll get a scrap alright; with a bunch of Poles/Slovakians etc not in Afghanistan or Iraq, or anywhere that is militarily relevant these days.

If you want to fight for a unit... join the British forces.

Infantry/corps/Marines/RAF/whatever.

We are overstretched so you're bound to see a bit.

Watch that looks quite newish what I got from it was tho that they couldn't give two sh*ts about there soldiers. MERCENARIES was the word used.

Most of that is absolute bullshit.
You are right though,
MERCENAIRES,apart from the officer cadre who must be French nationals.
Only the top six officer candidates from Cyp can become Legionnaire officers.
Don't ask.

If you want to know what todays legion is like go to Aubagne and find out for yourself.

It is pretty straight forward to pass selection if your a brit,as these are very rare nowadays, but it is still a f@#k to get out of when you pass selection and incorporation.

As people have said on this thing, the legion had its heyday in the 80s with UKs economical problems and was the place to be for Brits, but nowadays the only action you are likely to see is peacekeeping UN duties in Kosovo, Bosnia etc, or The REP does Tournants in Africa evey rotation. Why waste your time playing soldiers in france when you could be serving in Afghanistan or Iraq now with your own lads? Seriosly?? The only fair reason for joining is if you cant get into the British forces or have been kicked out or live a genuinely shit life here!

my personal opinion is that its an insult for a brit who is willing to go and fight but fight for another country, if your a true brit then fight for britain, the french have there own people to fight their battles same as everyone else, i know we have foreigners (pardon the spelling) in our forces but they dont have the values and a genuine love for there country, but true brits real solid hardcore brits do. I for one im proud to be getting the chance to fight for my country.
