Well, ibuprofen will cure you for a while, but it's probably not a good idea to get used to it.

I was told not to bother with ibuprofen, as shin splints are to complex to resolve with cream. I'll give that a go though. Cheers Brian :D .

I'm no expert on pain relief but won't taking things such as ibuprofen just fool yourself into thinking your ready for more exercise. Mr. Dedicated goes out running thinking he can feel no pain, comes home half an hour later, pain releif wear's off and he finds that he's actually done himself more damage running on shin splints where he should be resting?

Yes they will. Thats always a danger of doing any exercise while on painkillers, you could carry on exercising when your body's screaming at you to stop, thats when you do serious damage.

I recently went to a talk by an ultra distance runner who has quite a few records and done lots of such races, he said towards the end of one of them he was taking up to 8x recommended dosage of painkillers just to finish and win the race (it was an 8 day race). But he was so knackered up after that he had to take 8 months off all exercise!

edit: I swear my spelling gets worse by the day

Of course not!

If there is a problem get it fixed, and if in doubt seek medical advice, common sense really.

I was just going to give it a spell in my resting period, so I wouldn't be running on painkillers. Tried it last night, hasn't done anything for me, but then I didn't expect it would. I'll try anything to speed this recovery  .

when i go out running after around 2.5 - 3 miles i start to get a shap pain up the side of my right thigh. Does anybody know what this may be, could it be linked in with shin splints?

IF YOU DON'T FEEL 100% RIGHT THEN SEE A TRAINED MEDICAL DOCTOR!

Far to many people spout ill informed advice on this and other forums. If it hurts when you do excercise see someone who knows. Do not read & digest stuff from a gifted amateur "who's mate had the same problem".

To this day the advice to Run on Concrete in order to aide shinsplints will be remembered by me as the most stupid post I've ever read from some Wannerbie to another Wannerbie! SEE YOUR GP! He's spent four or five years learning how to do his job.

I wasn't saying he shouldn't get it fixed. The guy on the previous page asked if any medications would help, and a couple of ibuprofen tablets will. It wasn't advice, just an answer to his question.

It was advice. And really stupid advice at that!

The person you have advised may be a 14 year old lad. Ibrufren is not a tablet to be taken lighty. It helps a headache it don't help a pulled ligament or a pulled muscle. All it does is mask the real problem by helping with the pain which can result in the person making the original injury far worse than it is!!!!

For Christ Sake people! Stop with the Gifted Amatuer Advice unless your a fully qualified Doctor! And even then an open forum is not a place to tell people how to solve their medical problems!

Any more ADVICE from other people ref injuries to other Forum members and I will delete it ASAP!!! No messtins. Sick of it. I really am!

"ibuprofen will cure you for a while" That sounds like bad advice, move on.....

You know as well as I do that taking pain killers will deaded the pain in the short term and it's not a solution. What you should have said is get expert help.

I had them a few months ago, followed a few exercises which I found on a medical website (a reputable one), and it worked for me. Mine werent too bad in the first place though, so if yours are really painful then I would second the advice to see a doctor as soon as poss and get it properly sorted so you can crack on with your training.
