how are you coping with the lifestyle then Matt? was it a big shock to you in the first couple of weeks?

haha the first couple weeks of training is a definite shock at least it was for me because you expect to go there and get trained in tactics and all the good stuff you hear about, but the first two weeks is solely admin and getting settled in, it also consists of pt each day but its nothing like the prmc, you'll be tired at the end of the period but not destroyed.

cheers for that mate, do you have many young nods in your troop aged between 17-18 at all, if so then how are they coping with it, are they finding it harder than the older lads or are they coping the same as them, im just wondering because i'm 17

Matt said you were the 'funny guy' in the room KiloAlpha. I saw you in your troop photo but to be honest you all look the same. He told me the story about a guy in your troop falling asleep on sentry without a weapon, I really can't wait to join now. Anyway have fun.
P.S. I was always lead to believe the Marines badge was just the globe, larals (can't spell it) and the crown, but he had a red backing behind his badge and then I was told now all royals wear this even after training. Is this true?
Thanks

I try

, it was on Ex Early knight when the git left his weapon out and we payed for it
Correct me if i'm wrong but the blue beret and red backing was onced used by the royal marines as there everday beret, but was later placed by the green beret with no backing as it is today, but recruits now where the blue and red backed beret in training, im not sure about the band and what not though.

How often do you swim there. I have a fast breast-stroke but my front crawl in terrible. Being a lifegaurd for ages I tryed and tryed but I can't get the hang of it. Will they teach me or make me swim this? KiloAlpha, you seen Matt swim

My front crawl is pretty similar to drowning too. Breast stroke is bloody good though.

Yep

he has already gained the nickname 'the fish', apparantly he used to compete in butterfly for his county
I have a shoddy front crawl but so far for us the majority of swimming is conducted in breath stroke, we usally use front crawl for team activities in the pool.

We Usally swim every other day, and have PT everyday.
For being taught we have a weak swimmers group but they consist of weak breath stroke swimmers, as for being crap with front crawl as long as you can do it you'll be fine. Remember the BST and etc is done using breath stroke.

A common PT session for 934 is -
Denims ready for ropes, on spots.
Around 15mins basic routine thing, which consists of sprints, 'sit down, sit up' 'roll over roll over' 'front support place', and then those wierd arm things that dose bugger all.
Then we continue to our places for ropes then do around 2 climbs, then we are told how shoddy we are and then 'outside three ranks on the road GO'.
Then we usally do around 2 camp circuits, then return inside.
Once inside we are either beasted some more or do circuits which consist of press ups, sit ups, pull ups, squats and tricep dips.
And that is usally it everday for 934.

Its really interesting reading about how Royal trains its recruits compared with how i was trained up in Depot Para. You said that PT session is the same every day, which seems quite boring and uneventful. I did quite a few circuit sessions but i found them very boring and much prefered to get my Silver Shadows on for a run!
I know you are still in the relatively early stages of training but do you not do any basic runs out on Woodbury common, and hill sprint sessions or tabs/yomps in the first 12 weeks of training?
In para training i did ALOT of running including hill sprints even in the first week of training. The hardest phys session i had was in the first week of training when we did a run on the training area which included a visit to the reknown "Land of Nod" (nothing to do with Royal Marine Nod's!) and were banging out hill sprints in our sections for what seemed like hours, then continued on i think a 4-5 mile run and on the way back in were taken to another large hill with a waist high water pit half way down one side and had to sprint up one side of the hill and down through the water, i think we did 5 circuits of this before heading back to camp. And yes, there were also beastings like for example the winning section on a hill sprint would jog on the spot while the others would be doing burpees or doing that hill sprint again. Do you guys do anything similar to this early on in training or does it come later?
Cheers
