It's early days Andrew. So don't PANIC!

Forget the treadmill try to find an area where you can run on metalled roads. All your Speed marches in training are going to be over tarmac roads around CTC.

As to smoking. I started smoking full time two days after I joined at RMB Deal. Them days most blokes smoked like chimneys. The non smoking fitness freaks to the average Nod were just that, Freaks.

Take your time to read and digest what is on here. Some advice is duplicated time and time again but most of it is Kosher advice. So take it in and use it to your benefit.

Try and find a training partner as well. Nought worse than running and training on your tod. With an Oppo you will begin to enjoy it more and also you can bounce your thoughts and suchlike off each other ref your future in the Corps or whatever service you Oppo is going for.

Also see if you can get out and about with a map and Compass. You live in Liverpool. A few miles away you have North Wales. Once again get some Oppos to join you and start to learn the joys of working with a map and compass. The training is not all Running and leaping a lot of it is being able to get from point A to point B using a map and compass.

Get your swimming up to scratch as well. But with you coming from the penal colonies you should be able to swim should you not? :D

Thanks for putting things in perspective Artist!

I was absolutely shattered after reading some of the stuff posted!

After reading all that I had a gut feeling I put all my dedicated, time and effort to waste. :(

I will try to find someone through AFCO to start training with.

Might get my PJFT pushed back a bit.

awryt mate, listen to artist he knows what he's talking about. Read through the Royal Marine forums and you'll get lots of great tips.

I started of like you... couldnt run a mile :o But I got myself down to the beach and ran... and ran until I couldnt go any more.

1 or 2 "months" later I really started to improve. I havent passed PRMC yet so Im not one to give advice... but one thing thats working for me and other lads on this site is sprinting.

Get out there and jog down to your local football pitch and sprint from goal post to goal post. Or sprint up a steep hill, Dont give up, tell yourself you want to be a royal marine and go balls out.

Spend less time on here mate and get yourself out there and beast yourself

Anyway good luck with your training

dont worry about the fact that you used to smoke, i was a heavy smoker for four years, went through a stage of drinking lots and i mean lots and almost got pneumonia when i got a chest infection but still didnt stop smoking or drinking. i then decided to stop smoking and cut the drink down that was three months ago, since then i have improved my three mile time from 25:37 mins to 22:27. So dont worry it can be done just keep at it.

Cool, thanks for the confidence boost.

Yeah I am pretty much a non-alchoholic but smoked for 4 or so years..

I guess it will just take time.

dont worry when i joined para reg. (got MD) i was unfit and with a few hardcore runs by the pti i went from a 9 min 1.5mile to a 8.10.min what they done was pushed us up hills constanly. doing sprint. does the job good. also i have some physical problems. dnt mean to take over but i hope you can help. can parelle dip me + 47kg for 12 reps. but can only manage 34 press ups where my chest touches the ground. can anyone tell me, if during PRMC you can rest during pressups. i mean in the press up postion. and how can i add to my press ups which im finding very difficult.

I heard you can pause in the up position for a few seconds.

Yes you can pause in the Press-up position for around 3 to 4 seconds before the PTIs scream at you to do more :D .
Try using the search button as i'm sure this has been covered before.

Hope this helps.. Ed.

How did you go from a 15 minute 1.5 miler to a 50 minute 6.5 miler in the space of a few days? That's an absolutely massive difference, going from 10 minute mile pace to under 8 minute mile pace for over 3 times as long... :-?
