I was under the impression that people from other branches who have completed the AACC had to remove thier dagger + beret once returned to thier parent regiment as they're no longer attached 3 Cdo. But thats only what i've read on this forum.

Don't get me wrong I'm not doubting you Nipper, just curious. There was a time up and till recently where someone could join the Army at 17 and go on active service unless it was to Northern Ireland where you had to be at least 18. From memory I think there where were a couple of lads killed in the Falklands who were only 17.

I thought that was more or less irrelevant for the Marines as you had to be at least 18 to join, unless you went into the band. So you are saying this feller joined the Royals at 17 got his Green Lid and all the necessary got posted to one of the Commandos (40 commando for instance) weren't allowed to go on tour because he was under 18, so left? Got bored with civillian life so joined the Paras? And yet is still only 18/19?

I say again I'm not trying to be funny just curious and wanting to confirm that I have got that right.

You can join the RM at 16, and have been able to for a fair while as far as i was aware in what used to be a junior troop??? Think they stayed in training a little while longer, however now the 16 year olds join the same troop in training as any other would and follow the same course and its been like that for a fair while.

I thought the government ruling for the whole of the armed forces in Britain did not allow anyone under 18 to go in to a combat zone. May have changed since the falklands though i guess.

If he joined at 17, wouldn't he be nearly 18 by the time he passed out?

I thought once in th british forces you had to be in for 4 yr, and you couldnt leave until your time was up.

so if he joined when he was 17 how come he was in para reg when 18/19?

did he get medicaly discharged or something?

Rompton,

Your minimum service be it 3 and half or four years only starts once you reach your 18th birthday so i believe. So if you join at 16, you still have to serve that minimum once you reach 18...ie it starts from that point on. However at the same time if under 18 i think you can leave at any time, but i,m not entirely sure, i think i have heard this though.

No i dont think it is because when i was enlisted in to the army the chap said that i will serve 4 years from when i join. and my army contract was 4 yrs. i joined when iwas 16 so i could only get out when i was 20.

No Dwarfy is right, if you join at 16 you can leave at any point up until your 18th birthday, but those two years don't count towards your 4 years service.
