By "the software," I meant the printer, its drivers, Windows registry entries and the HP Director software that allows you to control the machine from your computer. I removed SP2. I removed all traces of the HP software, Then I reinstalled the HP software that came in the original box. The machine still didn't work.

Then I installed the update that was given out since I bought my machine. Still no dice. If I uninstall Windows itself, I'm really screwed because it came with my machine and therefore I don't have a CD for it but only a hard drive image disc and a recovery disk. Hard experience tells me not to trust those things. The gods of Microsoft are particularly unforgiving, in my experience. So, at the moment, I have a semi-doorstop. It will print documents and I found a way to get it to scan by doing so from the Windows control panel. But it still won't receive faxes.

As far as I know, HP are the pretty much the best when it comes to the multifunction machines, it could be a case that your HP does not like the make-up of the SP2 (or vice versa): http://www.vnunet.com/news/1157744

IF it is to do with SP2, there are also repair packs and security packs to - well - to sort out the f#ck-ups.
If HP is the best, then as the astronauts say, "We have a problem, Houston." It's not an SP2 thing because it still happens without SP2. I can't figure it out, and the on-line support people at HP are of no help and a websearch reveals no "repair packs" that will solve it. And I'm an intermediate computer user. It's not like I'm calling someone to ask where the "Any" key is.

Like I say, they suck you in and then drop you. Sounds like some women out there. p.s. I know it's all my fault. If I had a better attitude and asked took an interest in my Hewlett-Packard machine's feelings ...

Best these days to just put together a comp with OEM parts by yourself and a pirated copy of windows.

Two years ago i put together a top of the line PC for about $1100 Cdn. Sadly, it is now only a midrange machine.

And windows? fogetabudit...they charge roughly $500 for their lame excuse of an OS, but im not one to delve into Linux...so i bite the bullet, albeit a $20 bullet with a cd-key crack :P

Im not encouraging anything here...

Anyway,

sorry you've had such hassles Pasha...but u know...u could always revert back to old pen and paper for your research notes, unless you use advanced diagrams and whatnot..?

Good luck

I had a prob with my HP scanner/printer/fax/toaster/hair dryer. It worked fine till I installed Norton when it developed a charming little condition which HP said was a Microsoft prob and microsoft said "you are in a queue" On start up, the fax would hog 100% of the usage and nothing else would work till the fax decided it was bored with this game. This might take five minutes or it might take twenty five. Not very frustrating, obviously. The prob is caused when the machine starts up, as the fax goes into snooze mode it asks itself"has anything happened yet?" If the answer is "no" it stays in snooze for a preset time before asking the question again and the snooze/question routine repeats. In happy mode, this cycle takes minutes to repeat, but in sulk mode it takes milliseconds and takes over everything else. Task manager showed the prob to be with the.exe file on the HP and uninstalling all of the software unplugging the fax and sending it to the zoo etc didn`t work. Eventually I found a fix on an independant web site where it was said that both ms and HP had been aware of the possibility of this problem occurring since 1998 :o Chears, bastards.
Me latest frustration is me new pc has XP as the os and it won`t play with the software on me digital card reader. As Mrs Aitch has temporarily misplaced the usb cable from me camera I`m farked as far as sending phots goes. I could always do you a pencil sketch, if not the full Rembrant
Computors, I hates the bastards :x

Harry, have you got a link to that independent website? When this HP thing works, it's great. Unfortunately it doesn't work now, and that's not so great.

I'm tellin ya guys, don't deal with brand name legal software/hardware. It's a total waste of your time.

Get to know some nerdy computer guru, befriend him, put together something custom (for your needs only) and your off to the races!!

Buying a comp retail, you'll just get loads of applications that are unneeded and will jam up your computer.

I might feel bad if Microsoft was an up and comer company, but they're not.

Them and Intel come out with new software/hardware which requires you to spend atleast a 1000 bucks for a decent upgrade.

They can bite me.
