Its a 249.

Technically only the Belgian FN version is a Minimi.
The US version is the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon
See the link here for the differences..

Our sgt said that when newbies join the battalion they get the LSW, I asked him why and he said 'Mainly because the LSW is a piece of shit and why should someone who's been in the platoon ifor 10 yearsi lug that around with him, Its like a status thing.'

No. I think i am right in thinking there are still 2 LSW's per section of 8 soldiers (1 in each 4 man brick).

Apparently, LSWs are being given to sniper teams out on Telic as it's deadly accurate but crap as a SW due to low mag capacity. Also, there aren't enough sniper rifles to go round, this is a buzz I heard anyway.

Not much good as a sniper rifle though; they are the same as the IW with an effective range of just 400yds i think.

People often speak highly of the Bren Gun but that magazine only took 30 rounds, and it was was a lot heavier all round than the LSW. LSW has a much heavier barrel than the SA 280-2 and with its bi-pod makes it a very accurate weapon indeed. It is used for sniping in the Parachute Regiment, and I had great time firing it last time I was with them.

Yeah James, the whole idea of a heavier barrel is icnreased accuracy and slightly better range so it does beat the IW, obviously it's not used as a full blown snipers rifle a pseudo-sniper rifle due to lack of L96s.

but at least with the bren, if you were hit, you were hit and you knew it.

lovely bit of kit.

The whole thing that the HV 5.56 ammo doesn't put you down for good with 1 shot is in it's actual design, the round itself was designed only to wound & maim, the idea being that it would take more people out the battle to help their injured mate than a straight kill, but with these fanatics they just keep on coming even if their mates are hit I suppose because of their mentality. The round swere designed in cold war times to fight a 'real' army which would treat the wounded, maybe now it's time for a manstopper round.
