On the subject of sailors,
Sir Francis Chichester was one of the best and most humble Gentlemen
I ever met(Tower Pier,London,yonks ago).Handshake like a vise,fit as a flea and already in his sixties.A truely great man.
For those who don't remember him,
Go to

I was lucky to have been invited on board two of his boats,Gipsy Moth 111 and 1V.

Who was that then??
First Atlantic rower?? I can only think of Chay Blyth, and he's in no shape or form a Walter.

Wholley, when you look at what Francis Chichester did in Gypsy Moth and then compare the equipment used in the Vendee Globe it's comparing Neanderthal with Armani.

El Prez,No Decca,No Loran,No GPS.
Just a Sextant and the Sun,Moon and Stars.
Thems were the days.I hated Decca, too damn slow, well for fishing anyway.
Seems the Vikings bumped into Newfoundland without the help of any of the above.Chris Columbus, eat your heart out.

I've found it!!!
I know where walters come from.
They are specifically designed to attract attention to themselves.

A Poem for all Walters. (not aimed at anyone on the forum just Walters in general)
Walter Walter talking sh*te,
Attracts a Bootneck with his Tripe,
The Bootneck says to this here Walter,
"Hey Walter, mines a Pint, get it quick or your in the Sh*te"
Walter being a total plonker, buys the beer and then does tell.
A Load of crap to our dear Royal, who burps a bit and then decided,
What Walter really really needed, was a size ten boot shoved up his jacksie.
Walter wailed and Walter moaned but Royal then did the dirty,
And Shafted Walters little Mummy!
Mummy cried and then she moaned "O Royal do it once again"
"My Walter being a total pratt can hold yer boots, O....... and yer Cap!"
Walter sat there quite confused. His Mummy had just spoilt his ruse!
Grow up lad and stand to attention!
Yes you! You silly little di*k
So Walter did what he was told.
His mummys now having a real good session,
No messtins shes rather special,
Cos mummys moving down to Poole,
All because Bootnecks make her Drool!

the NZ Army has had a walter in its midst recently....a recruit complained that a Bombadier was being too had on him, humiliating him infront of his squad.
The poor Bombadier got charged and was court marshalled over it...it got chucked out , the tosser who complained finished his training and is now in the artillary,i think he shouldve got the boot up the date ...all the way out of camp.....

Please tell me if I'm wrong (as though you wouldn't) but wasn't it John Ridgeway with Chay Blyth? He went on to set up one of the Executive Outdoor training establishments where he could beast lots of self important people, sounds like an enjoyable way to earn a penny or two.

barryc,
It was Ridgeway and Blyth that rowed across the Alantic together.
If my memory serves right, Blyth was a Sgt in 3Para and Ridgeway was a Capt.
