About time he grew up and started taking responsibility for his own actions instead of blaming friends, society, father Christmas etc!

Sorry - I don't accept his background as an excuse either.
Plenty of people grow up in rough areas, or have a hard upbringing, but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting on a plane and going halfway round the world to beat someone up before. You can't even claim he just lost his temper - that is a calculated attack, planned and carried out when he had had time to calm down from whatever it was he thought the other bloke had done to upset him. He knew he was going AWOL, and he knew what he was doing was wrong and would get him kicked out of the Army, and he still went ahead and did it.
As long as people keep making excuses for him he will never take responsibility for his own actions and choices.
