Hi,new to the site & just wanted to comment on the sniper thing.I've been out for 10 years so could all be different now.For starters no one would get a S course out of training. As someone said earlier you had to put time in.Sniper course is more than just being a good shot.Your field craft/map reading/distance work has to be a1 or you won't get to take the "Single shot".We had 2 snipers in the rifle company, that for the most part were GD,but could be employed in their specialist role when needed. When we went to Iraq our OC insisted on the L96 being carried as a personal weapon due to the vast open terrain & that he was a "warrie" type of bloke.Hope this helps some.

feathers,
The original was answered most succinctly in the three subsequent boards (posted in Jan I think). But if you choose to drink from murky waters expect to get the shites!
Que?
Loz, methinks he has thrown down the gauntlet!

Feathers, I'm with you, you were answering the original thread.
I jumped out of perfectly serviceable aircraft for fun, I also flew them, I know what a frigate is, and a snipers rifle. I guess I'm, therefore, 'all right in the head'.
Groucho Marx was right.

I too jumped out of an aircraft once. Didn’t like it so learnt to fly them instead. I wanted to be a sniper but always failed to pass the range day. The guys next to me thought always seemed to get full marks!!
Per Mere Per Terram but mostly per foot.

A friend of mine was an Army sniper in WW2. He has not mentioned firing his rifle. His job was to sneak behind the German lines at night and hide up. He then had to do some observation during daylight. he might stay a couple of days, then sneak back at night. His observations were confidential, and he could only report back to one officer.
Example :- A concentration of tanks has been spotted by an aircraft. Go and take a close look and report back on the situation.

Nomad says;
The smallest denomination is a Sniper, then a fire team (2, 3 to 4 men)a section comprises 9 to 8 men, which can be split into two one being the fire team. in NI a section is split into two Bricks of 4 men.
The same as Army Infantry Regiments then.

Steve C wrote:So once you pass out of training you can go directly to sniper school if you've gotten a high enough standard proficiency test and are considered to have the "aptitude"? Would doing some shooting beforehand increase your chances on the proficiency test? I signed up for the FCA (irish reserves) over here, i expected to get in earlier, done medicals etc up to now, but the paperwork is dragging out. By the time I head to CTC I will probably have gotten some rounds down with a steyr aug, would you consider the steyr aug, being a bullpup design, has the same firing mechanics as the SA80 and that it could help me in this test?
I heard that RMs out of training always serve a set period in a GD role "earning their spurs" before specialisation, is this true or can you specialise, PW3, HW etc straight after pass out?
Thanks!

FCA? Surely this is now the CA, or hasn't the last defence white paper been fully implemented yet?
Bryn (Whose sad enough to read the Irish Defence White paper, and on the two or three brigade issue thinks realistically they should go for one.)

[HIJACK] would I be right in thinking that the OC is the platoon commander, the sgt the platoon sergeant, each corporal is a section commander and 3 lance-corporals as well as 2 i/cs? And when they get broken down into 4 man teams is there the section commander in one and the 2 i/c in the other?
