Foot sprains/other injuries

Post by Macleod »

I'm close to sinking into a state of depression as a few days after I get my AST date, I think I have sprained my right foot and i'm having to visit the doctor today to find out what i've done and will probably get sent for x-ray. Anybody ever had a foot sprain and know how long it will be before i'm even walking normally again because I can only drag the side of the right foot that isn't sprained. Also has anybody else had the injury blues during the application process, i'm a bit down cause this totally f*cks up my excercise routine (which is zero now) and worried about how long it will take before I get back to normal.

How did you sprain your foot and where does it actually hurt? I sprained my left foot a couple of weeks ago and fingers crossed, I seem to have come back to exercise on it with no problems/ without any weaknesses. Sprains tend to fix themselves quite quickly when you're young and healthy, especially if you rest it properly and ice it lots! I also used a wobble board which is supposed to help strengthen your ankles too...

I seem to constantly have also had injury blues the last few months, I had a stress fracture in October, which put me out for three months, then coming back into exercise slowly (or so I thought at the time) I then started getting the beginnings of shin splints, got through that, then fell off a horse and sprained my left foot! Argh!! Again coming back into running slowly....so far so good...

I found that working on my upper body helped me stop get so frustrated with my leg/foot injuries, which turned out to be good as my upper body strength before was far lacking behind my cardio fitness- hope some of this helps! Hang in there and do whatever they tell you to do rest-wise, it'll pay off in the long run :D

I hurt it when I was running, there is a small stile included in my running route and when I ran over like I usually do I landed awkwardly on the side of my foot and it bent inwards. It hurts down the side of my foot just below my smallest toe. I visited the hospital today and it turns out I have broken a bone in my foot and now I am in full cast and have crutches. I have to go back to the hospital tomorrow for full details and to get my sick note and find out how long I will be out for but it is a complete blow to my training for PGAC and with my AST coming up I don't quite know where I stand with the whole application process.

Oh no that's really bad luck :( it's always the slightest things, like landing awkwardly that can put you out of action. Try and focus on other things whilst your out of action- I know it's easier said than done, but if you can focus on doing something else (I used it as a chance to really get into my Uni work) then you'll find it less frustrating. But I know that it is easy to say that and harder when you're sat at home annoyed with the whole situation.

Yeah i'm sure I will find something to keep me busy but you always end up thinking about it again and the frustration kicks in big time. I'm at my lowest today though because i've found out it will take around 3 months to heal so I called AFCO and told them so they've cancelled my AST and told me that after it heals I have to wait a year before I can re-apply because you need an injury free year before application. So that means I am stuck doing the job I hate in the town I hate for even longer than I expected, feel so down.

Mate, I know it sounds a bit s***, but a year isn't that long. Will give you a chance to improve your phys and make sure your body is 100%. I come out of PARA training and had to wait '2 years' before I could re-apply! :o

It does come round quick, honest! :D

Eek- that's a bit of a worry for me then too! I have not been told at any point anything about having an injury free year before they'll accept an application...is that for all services/ branches/ trades?? I had my injury back in November and just had my MRI scan to say it's all clear- was hoping that would be enough... :o

What is the purpose of electrical stimulation on an injury? For example, when you go to a chiropractor with an injury, he might hook you up to a machine that uses electrical stimulation to that injuried part.

Take it in your stride and put it down to experience. I too injured myself prior to gunner training having passed PGAC. My injury was a torn hip flexor and groin related problem all stemming from over-use injuries. I was in physio on and off for nearly a year and a half. I t was very demoralizing at times but I never took my eye off the end goal. Just concentrate on getting over the injury and doing everything exactly how the physio tells you. Build back up slowly and in no time at all you will be back to fitness. Dont worry I wouldn't think they would bin you now, Id imagine an injury of this type wouldnt be enough to put the recruit staff off but rather set you another date for the AST. Good luck and trust me when I say do not force your training intensity as you could do more harm than good and further increase the recovery time!
