YO training

Post by AlexRR »

Hi guys,
Does YO training work the same as Recruit training in that can you get back trooped? Or if you fail a gym test or speed march?
Also what rank do non-graduate entrants straight from sixth form hold? because the RM website says ''In Commando units a Lt could still be a Troop Commander as the rank is also held by Direct Entry Officers who commence training before the age of 21'', I thought (like it is in the army) you get commissioned as a 2LT or have I got the wrong end of the stick?!

You can't get backtrooped as there is only one troop per year. I can't answer your other Q I don't really understand it.

If you can't get back trooped then what happens to you if you fail on the tests/exercises etc? I'm not doubting what you say Jay, just interested to know what would happen if you were to fail.

I think those who join after leaving university are at the rank of 2Lt during training then get a promotion to Lt on completion of phase 1. Direct entry candidates, or those who pass between 18 and 20, stay at 2Lt until they reach 21

If you fail an exercise/march you will continue in training but with a fail against that exercise, which is not what they want to see, and you will almost certainly enter/climb up the warning system (3 strikes and you're out).

You can be back coursed but usually only through exceptional circumstances such as long term injury through no fault of your own. This will then possibly involve a temporary posting within RN until the start of the next batch.

It's unlikely that you will be back coursed due to lack of ability. YO training has a 30-40% failure rate. If you fail the Cdo Crs you will continue in training and re-do it at some point, probably in combination with Final Ex.

It's a bit scarey when you see it like that! I know there isn't hardly any space for failure in Recruit training, but even less in YO training, blimey!

Then again, I suppose after the POC and AIB they will have a good idea of those who can and cannot make the course. If you fail an exercise is there the chance to do it again, or make up on others?

In my day you spent six years in the rank of 2Lt/Lt until obtaining
a Captaincy.
A Lt received the pay of an Army Captain, a Captain a Major etc
and so on.
Now rank promotion has been standardised time-wise with Perce.
In 1956 a Captain earned £700 p.a.
