Anyone want to know about training?

We do run but so far it has mostly been camp circuits, we had a 3 miler in week four and a 4 miler planned for week 5 so i think we will be running alot more than usuall. But like whats been said i've only just finished week 4 so all the fun is to come.
Also within the gym we would learn something new everytime and then by next gym session that activity we have just learned would be put into session.
But apart from that so far PT has been somewhat repetative.

I don't know what you will do on the ranges though as diffrent troops do diffrent things and some don't even do anything.

The first yomp i did was after exercise in week 7, its only daysacks though(poncho, bivvybag, CBA, helmet, 24 hour rashons, warmers kit and Gortex trousers and jacket) and 4-5 miles long. Then week 10 the whole exercise is just full of yomping over Dartmoor(covered roughly 50km over 4 days) but again was only daysacks(some troops have used Bergans). The first full kit yomp i did was in week 14 and was 4 mile Insurtion March Thashing lol then we did a 10 km Load carry(following day).Paratrooper01 wrote:Its really interesting reading about how Royal trains its recruits compared with how i was trained up in Depot Para. I know you are still in the relatively early stages of training but do you not do any basic runs out on Woodbury common, and hill sprint sessions or tabs/yomps in the first 12 weeks of training?
In para training i did ALOT of running including hill sprints even in the first week of training. The hardest phys session i had was in the first week of training when we did a run on the training area which included a visit to the reknown "Land of Nod" (nothing to do with Royal Marine Nod's!) and were banging out hill sprints in our sections for what seemed like hours, then continued on i think a 4-5 mile run and on the way back in were taken to another large hill with a waist high water pit half way down one side and had to sprint up one side of the hill and down through the water, i think we did 5 circuits of this before heading back to camp. And yes, there were also beastings like for example the winning section on a hill sprint would jog on the spot while the others would be doing burpees or doing that hill sprint again. Do you guys do anything similar to this early on in training or does it come later?

The first couple of weeks were a breeze, this is mostly because of my age and that I have lived away from home before - I also mentally prepared myself that it was going to be nails.Macca wrote:how are you coping with the lifestyle then Matt? was it a big shock to you in the first couple of weeks?
It does get irritating though having to fall in after scran and every other hour , you just want to be left to get on with it like you are after foundation.
lodge- we started with 52 and now we have 48, only one opt out so far which is unusual, 2 huntered for injuries they pretty much had before they got there and an Md for IBS. They'll be atleast one backtrooping after gym passout.
Fleet - I shall be doing some phys today, hill sprints in boots. I have only done a bit of phys so far like you say it's nice to have a rest.

Do you guys get thrashings throughout the day (i.e. not in PT)? We always had "corridor thrashings", consisting of lots of different exercises and stress positions...whatever took the Staff's fancy! We would get these for anything like, catching somone sitting on their bed during the day or walking instead of running about. You guys get the same?
Utrinque Paratus - READY FOR ANYTHING!
For myself paratrooper01 I never got hassle from my training team out of working hours. More often than not our NCO's would pop into our grotts after a days training and help us with various stuff, be it teaching us how to bull boots or sorting out how to put a CEMO (Complete Equipment Marching Order) together, ought in fact that would make our's and their lives easier. In fact my DI from training is now one of my Bessie Oppos, A bloke called Yorkie Malone, ditto my sect Cpl, Cyril Goodhand. Later when I was part of a training team myself I respected my Nods personal space save for locker inspections and the like and did the same as my training team did for me. Beasting people for no reason to me is a load of crap. People who do that sort of thing are to my mind PRONGS of the lowest order. I like to think that the blokes I took though training respected me for respecting them as Human beings. Any Moron can shout and scream and get their rocks of with the power they have over people.
For myself and most of the people whom I worked with our aim was to produce Royal Marine Commandos who could pass out and join whatever unit they were drafted to and be able to fit in ASAP. Thats what the job of a training team is, to produce at the end of training a guy who can do his job. No more, no less.

We certainly did, my grott was right outside the hill so we had a few thrashings but it was mainly just press ups we did. We always got thrashed for a reason like when people messed up, talking in 3 ranks, being late etc... which was fair.Weird, i did my first tab in week 3!

There was only 2 times we got thrashed for no reason but i won't go into that.

I'm not a marine or para, i'm in the raf regt, when we did our phys, the first 9 weeks were fitness phys, circuits in the gym, swimming circuits (you can make a pool a very painful place) and progressive running from 3 miles up to 9 and then introductions to running in boots, then after week 9 we went into battle phys, loads of speed marching, and a few loaded marches and stuff like casevacs, dummy drags, jerry can carrys etc. and as for extra beastings and that, all the bloody time, but 90% we bought on ourselves, a few seemed to have no realmotive excpt boredom of the training team, but who knows. A few highlights to me are, a demonstration of the effects of 'degradation' in 4 Romeo dress cat. but i wouldn't change it, having just done 2 weeks DCC field firing on otterburn, my fitness got me through where some were going down.

I agree with you here. Para recruits are nearly always in a state of fear i guess of being thrashed for no reason whatsoever. Whenever we paraded in the corridor it was a case of, are we going to be thrashed or not. In the end i actually started enjoying it, because the inspections took a step down and thus you could afford to get your uniform a bit grubby during the beasting and not have to change afterwards! For the smallest things we would get thrashed the most. It was very much down to how the staff were feeling that day and how imaginative they were!
Future_Marine, do you feel now that the staff are there to pass or fail you?
We always had the feeling of wanting to be failed, although they told us they wanted to pass us all

they only thrash us when we do something wrong but thats no problem
eg,when half of the troop went out and got bladderd in the first few weeks and came back at 4-5 in the morning when we had to be back on camp for 10,we got wet on marshal star (the joys of peter's pool!!)
i've had a few press up's for a dirt on my weapon on field inspections but i haven't got a problem with that
they only thrash us when we do something wrong but thats no problem

Only got the odd bit of extra cleaning of the rooms..... well into the night
If you have seen the film Officer and Gentleman you will know what I mean
