3 Para staying until September? :-(

Post by APara'sMum »

Hi all, my lad is in 3 para and i was told today by one of his friends from 2 para, that they might be staying on operations in the Gulf until September. Has anybody else heard any rumours about this, and do you think it is true, even though he has been out there for 3 months. Are they really going to make me suffer another 3 months. :-( I was just hoping someone might know a bit more than i do. Thanks all.

Hi Lily, I heard today about a reservist who is scheduled to go there shortly for what is promulgated as a six month stay.
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

s a wife of a Royal Marine, i can sympathise with you as to the uncertainty. Your son joined up to do this job and i can assure you that he would rather be out there doing his bit and earning his gong than being behind on rear party. Whilst i appreciate its hard for those left at home you have to look for the positive, plan a party for his return and give him the welcome home he deserves. Keep cutting out of the paper and make a scrap book that he can show his children/ grandchildren. Keep a diary of life back at home so he can catch up on what you and his family have been doing - he misses all that as well!!. but most of all keep writing as the situation changes day to day. If you find things really hard and want to talk then PM me and i will give you my number. Remember stiff upper lip and smile through it - be proud.

He is lucky that it is only three months, I can remember a time when you could spend years overseas. My grandfather spent 15 years in India on one of his tours. Many of the National Servicemen spent their whole time out of the country once they had finished training, and got no leave, no phone calls home, and we where even stopped from writing home for months at one time when there was flap on.

My wife's grandfather's last commission in the Andrew was onboard HMS Doris on the South African station; it lasted from 18th November 1897 until the ship paid off on 31st May 1901. No flying the wives out for a visit after the husband had been away for three months, neither were there any E-mails or telephone calls to keep in touch. I'm sure JR and 'Owdun etc have all done a two and a half year commission during the early day of their service.

 Correct Wully, two and a half year commission was the norm in the hey days of the late forties and early fifties and I have know certain specialist rates to have extra months slapped on to their commish,I did two commissions with 40 both of two and a half years.Shortest commish on board HMS Striker just under 12 months.HMS Jamaica was for 18 months and was supposed to be Home Fleet?? but spent the 18 months wandering around the Mediterranean 'Oggin' and a cruise around the Caribbean seas.
Two Maried accompanied draft's with Brigade HQ,with a small sojourn to the delights of Aden, and to the Philipines, plus a few months in darkest Borneo.
By the time I left Singapore for the last time, my youngest sprog could hold a good conversation in Chinese with the 'Chinks' living next door,Happy families 'some times' lots of tears from 'her indoors' and the usual Mum who's that strange man????.
With retrospect by the time I had signed on for my 5th five, the Lady did protest and buggered off left me with the offsprings, So there was a certain advantage to signing on.  Aye jr

Why are you replying to posts that are 3 years old?
