It is with regret that I have to inform you of the passing of Major Bushell RA. David [75] died on Saturday 11th February 2012 after a long illness. David was proud to have served with the RA and he was also an Airborne Gunner of the 33 Battery. He joined the Army at fourteen and a half and when he was eighteen he turned down a commsion and did his P Course. He was in Cyprus during the troubles in 1956 and led a battery on Suez lnvasion and fought his way as far south as El Gapp. September 1957 as a Sgt he led a unit of four 75 mm pack howitzer in Radfan, and these were the same guns that had been used in Arnhem. He boasted that while there they never ever got paid and when they came home they did not have enough cash to pay him his back pay. He then went on to serve in Aden and the UAR. He was then sent to command a unit of guns in Borneo were he was then a warrant officer. In the early 1960's he accepted a commission as long as he could take his pay entitlement with him.
David then went on to set up the first battery of Nuclear tipped Minute Men Missiles in Germany for the British. David spent some 12 years out of the 22 he served out of the UK and after leaving the army he worked tirelessly for Vetrans groups. He was for a while Chairman of the ex-servivicemens joint council, Royal Artillery Association, and the Parachute Regimental Association until his illness caused him to stand down
