Huge Reorganisation ofthe Marines, Para's, Navy & Army!

Post by Ares-God of War »

hello
iI was reading the Sunday Times and saw that only 120 Para's will be trained to Paracute from the original 2,500. This is due to the lack of Hercules aircraft and bugetcuts, "the rest of the Para's continue to fight as normal infrantry". This is partly since we have not jumped since 1956 in the Suez Canal Conflict.

It also says that "the Royal Marines will be placed in effect under army commandand paired with the Para's" for a rapid responce unit.
The marines will still have a marintain capability but most operations will be done from helicopters.

The RAF stands to lose 130 tornado jets as well as the new Nimrod MRA4 spy plane.

The Navy will lose its base in Plymouth and effective control of the Marines and its two Assult Ships HMS Albion & HMS Bulwark.

The Army will lose at least one Armored Brigade.

The MoD declined to comment.

Certainly hope its not true, but I wonder if thats 120 per year? Or are they saying 120 will be kept current?

RM under Army Command, not too much of a leap there as we are tasked by the Army anyway and I'm sure the RN will still have an input to our other deployments.

Wonder who will control the Assault ships? RLC? can't see it happening .

There is already a Company of Royal Marines working as part of the Para set up and has been for a number of years.

If the paracute training is fully stopped the paras would loss its hard fought reputation as an elite fighting force and become meer infrantry?

The Para's did their first operational jump since 1956 in December 2010 in Afghanistan and it was a great success, so may be the thinking caps will go on again.

Ares, I wouldn't worry too much about this sort of stuff. Each yr as cuts are thrown at the Military the usual calls are made.

RAF.........disband the Red Arrows.
Army........Amalgamate The Para Regt with either the RAF Regiment (God forbid) or the RM.
RN........Disband the RM.

Sadly things may change and already 1 Para are supporting SF along with the RM and RAF Regt, so an amalgamation is already in place (as it has been in SF for over 30yrs). As an ex Bootie I for one would not like to see the Para's lose any combat capability, and I have worked with them on many occasions so know just how good they can be.

Raf Reg aint whipping boys. Good at what they do and (personally) gettin fed up with people unfamiliar with both sides of the coin coming out with throw away statements. you know full well as a regiment the two are unlike. As a squadron, however, namely 2Sqn Raf Reg they can hold their own amongst the big boys - Para Reg and Royal. Besides Paras and RAF Reg (2SQN) have been amalgamated for yrs in terms of training, exchanges and 16AA. Ans the Paras as a spearhead wont lose anything. As a unit they will keep going on and on, a small thing such as transport wont worry maroon in a scrap.

Nah no need for an apology. Perhaps on this occassion I was being highly strung, but my statement was a valid point.
