Battlefields Trust London Lunchtime Talks start 25 May 2012

Post by Battlefields_Trust »

BATTLEFIELDS TRUST LUNCHTIME LECTURES
hosted by The Fusilier Museum London
in the Officer’s Mess of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers
HM Tower of London

We are setting up a programme of lunchtime talks for people who are interested in military history and live, work in or visit the City of London. Our programme will cover battles, battlefields, new research in military history and work by new and established authors. It will also be a chance to find out about the battlefield history of the South East of England. Our speakers include many published military historians and archaeologists. We are doing this to raise awareness of The Battlefields Trust as well as attract members and funds to help us in our role to preserve, interpret and develop battlefields for heritage purposes.

Our host is the Fusilier Museum, and the talks are held in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Officers Mess in the Tower of London.

The events for Summer 2012 are as follows:

25 May 2012 Naseby: The Battle Then and the Battlefield Now - -
Speaker: Martin Marix Evans.
Naseby was the decisive battle of the English Civil War, securing the eventual victory of Parliament and opening the door to the growth of democratic government. While other major battles – Hastings, Bosworth and Culloden– are well marked, Naseby had been neglected for many years before the Battlefields Trust set up a working party to plan development in 2001.

Martin Marix Evans is a prolific military history author of military history and has been leading the development of the Naseby battlefield. The profit from this talk will be donated to the Naseby Battlefield Project.

The Battlefields Trust

The Battlefields Trust is an international charity, based in the UK with the aim of preserving, interpreting and developing battlefields for heritage purposes.

We were formed in 1992 in response to the plans to build a road across the battlefield of Naseby. Since then we have grown to become an organisation with branches looking after battlefields across England and with ambitions to grow world wide.

Some of our successes have been stopping inappropriate development on battlefields. We have also set up and managed projects to interpret battlefields. We ran the project which rediscovered the battlefield of Bosworth. We have also set up interpretation panels and memorials for battlefields such as Roundway Down and the V2 strike on Chiswick in 1944. We run a programme of battlefield walks and events.

We work closely with English Heritage and the Royal Armouries. Our President is Robert Hardy CBE and our Patrons are Lord Dannatt and Lord Boswell of Ayhno. A significant proportion of English Heritage's battlefield panel are senior members of the Trust. Our membership includes amateurs with a hobby interest as well as leading battlefield archaeologists and military historians.
