Hopefully this comes across OK and not a silly question, but from their history No 2 Commando was reformed as a parachute unit, which later became 11th Special Air Service Battalion and later the Parachute Regiment, and their role is to perform raids from the air, are they basically airborne commandos?
"Following Churchill's wishes for "a corps of at least 5,000 parachute troops, suitably organised and equipped" a Parachute Training School was established at Ringway Airport near Manchester and No 2 Commando was chosen for the first training in parachute duties; the regiment quickly growing into the 11th Special Air Service Battalion and ultimately, on the 1st August 1942, the Parachute Regiment. By the end of WW2, the Regiment comprised of 17 battalions."

I think that this chap is drifting back in time when the first Parachute Regiment was set up and a group of Commandos were drafted in to start it off.
Re: Are the Paras Commando's too?
If you mean are they Commando's who then complete the Para course and then become Para's then the answer is No. However if you mean are they a Specialised airborne version of Commando's then Yes.
Two very different Units but both with a very specialised role.

Re: Are the Paras Commando's too?
Yes thats exactly what I meant. Obviosuly they don't do the Commando course, but that they are essentially Airborne Commandos, just without the title of Commando. Essentially Commandos are raiders and as they perform airborne raids it made sense to me that that is what they are, just without the official title of commando.timex wrote:If you mean are they Commando's who then complete the Para course and then become Para's then the answer is No. However if you mean are they a Specialised airborne version of Commando's then Yes.

I've hered the infantry say that when Paras hit the ground they are just infantry, but it seems they are more than that, that they are raiders/commandos.
Thanks

In general terms they are.
And they would have been subject to the 'Commando Order' issued by Adolf Hitler on 18 October 1942, which also applied to all Special Forces.
Of course nowadays the titles Para and Commando indicates specific types of unit and the courses the individuals have completed.
That said it is possible to badge collect and bag both sets.

There is a Company of RMC attached to 1 Para along with two squadrons of the RAF Reg
